The Bibliothèque du Boisé receives LEED® Platinum certification
Earlier this year, the Bibliothèque du Boisé, located in Montreal city's Saint-Laurent borough, was awarded LEED Platinum certification by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). This municipal building houses a library (main element), an art exhibit centre, and the Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec's museum reserve.
Exp's team assisted Saint-Laurent borough representatives by providing advice for the eco-design, eco-construction (quality control) and eco-certification of the building according to the LEED Canada NC 1.0 rating system.
From LEED Gold to Platinum
Since 2009, LEED® Gold certification must be obtained for all new buildings larger than 500 square meters owned by the City of Montréal. Once construction to LEED Gold standards of the Bibliothèque du Boisé building was completed, achieving Platinum level certification seemed like an attainable goal. And so, our team rose to the occasion and continued to work hard to ensure that the building satisfied the new requirements. In our role as LEED counsellors, we worked with increased thoroughness and conducted double quality controls internally, as if we were being audited.

LID research project - partnership with Ryerson University
Dr. Soheil Kashi, a Sr. Water Resources Engineer at the Infrastructure Division of exp in Brampton, is currently conducting a research project in partnership with Ryerson University's Civil Engineering Professor, Dr. Darko Joksimovic, to develop a guidance methodology for optimal design of low impact development (LID) technologies for storm water management. This project is funded by the National Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC) of Canada.
The design guidance for LID technologies is currently evolving in Ontario. Exp has experienced an increase in clients wishing to incorporate these emerging green technologies into new land developments. However, previous attempts to gain storm water control credits for innovative designs have resulted in delays in the approval process, primarily because they were based on simple design methods and limited published literature information. The LID design and modeling have been very active areas of research, resulting in a large number of publications and recommendations on specific design features and modeling tools in the last decade.
This project will draw from this body of knowledge to develop a design approach that: 1) is based on the performance requirements, monitoring experience and approvals process in Ontario, 2) identifies and incorporates the most appropriate and recent model(s) into an optimization framework to meet the requirements set out by exp based on industry experience. Through this project, aided by the Ryerson University researchers, exp expects to develop an innovative design approach based on the modeling and optimization of LIDs that will be used to improve upon the current design practices and strengthen the scientific basis of future proposed projects, ultimately leading to easier approvals and wider implementation of LIDs in new land developments in Ontario.
